Package | Description | License | wanted by | remark |

MPlayer | Other very good media player | GPL | users | MPlayer is a movie player which runs on many systems (see the documentation). It plays most MPEG/VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, RealMedia, Matroska, NUT, NuppelVideo, FLI, YUV4MPEG, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, and Win32 DLL codecs. You can watch VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, DivX 3/4/5 and even WMV movies.
And it uses patented code all over the place so you would have to cripple it. That the MPlayer developers dont like. - Henne |
Racer | racing-game | Please see link | Gamers | A graphically very nice game. Please see http://www.racer.nl/legal.htm for further licensing-information
Racer has been dropped after SUSE 9.1. Sources for current versions are no longer available and since we needed to adjust them to our needs ... FMOD license is problematic as well. (sndirsch) |
Vegastrike | Similar to Privateer | GPL | Gamers | Marvellous graphics effects, just take a look at screenshots.
Package has been dropped after 8.0 simply because of its huge size. (sndirsch) Would it be possible to create a meta-package (like MS fonts) which downloads and installs the (big) data files when you install the game? |
Eterm | Color terminal emulator | GPL | A lot of people, users | Eterm used to be in SUSE and was removed recently. I'd love to see it back in SUSE. It's a great terminal emulator.
It was dropped because the maintainer does not maintain it anymore, and it has no UTF-8 support which is required in modern times. --Msmeissn |
Mythtv | Mythtv is a PVR project with many features. | GPL | users | There are also many plugins available. There is already a third party apt repository. (http://folk.uio.no/oeysteio/apt/suse/)
same as for MPlayer or xine. Most of the media handling in mythtv is patented so we can ship it only crippled and then its no use anymore - Henne |
XBill | Little people running around the screen are trying to infect your computers, you must kill them | Unknown | Gamers | Old and very simple game but very addictive.
xbill has been dropped after SUSE 7.3 by intention. Guess why ... (sndirsch) |
jed | Text Editor with syntax highlighting. | GPL | programmers | Powerful, but compact, cross-platform editor with quite a good emacs mode.
jed-0.99.16-32.src.rpm (Build Date: Mon Mar 17 15:01:58 2003) |
nedit | Text Editor with syntax highlighting. | GPL | programmers, casual users | Keystrokes like notepad, but generally quite usable. Tabbed windows, good client mode.
nedit-5.3-118.src.rpm (Build Date: Mon Mar 17 15:33:06 2003) Newer version: nedit-5.5-4.src.rpm |
OpenDX | 3D scientific visualization software | GPL | Scientists Students | OpenDX is a package for visualization of 3D data. It features surface plots, volume plots, 3D-plots of functions and visualization of time-dependent (4D) data. It is programmable via a visual interface by connecting various functional modules for visualizing and interactively or non-interactively manipulating and browsing data. OpenDX was in a number of SuSE versions. Last version of DX was 4.2.0 and it appeared in SuSE 9.0. DX was dropped in 9.1 and later. |
ngrep | Sniffer | more free than GPL | Network Admins | smart, text based, very useful |
rfc | ASCII versions of RFCs | FSR, Other License(s) [from SUSE 9.2 package] | programmers, sysadmins | It's damn convenient to have RFCs just there, or grep them, without needing to go through Web search interfaces. Please put it back in. - Joachim |
Webmin | Webmin/Usermin/Virtualmin Browser-based Administration Suite for unixoid systems | BSD/GPL | Users who dislike YaST2 or want to configure more stuff | Main Website (english).
Why was this dropped? It's awesome. The only complaint I have heard about it is it being insecure, but if that's the case, just put a warning label on it that people should only do it over SSH. mikedep333 It needs to be accessed over the web... Thats why its called "webmin". And it configurations is not aligned with YaST and SUSE methods of sysconfig handling last time we checked. -Msmeissn |
ZSnes | SNES/Super Famicom emulator for x86 computers | GPL | finrold | ZSNES supports mode 7, sound, Super FX, and a lot more.
whats wrong with snes9x? - Henne Was removed from 8.1-8.2, not sure why. Perhaps snes9x was seen as enough? --VF 05:44, 17 February 2006 (UTC) |
NiL | Liero Clone | ? | Tiago Gasiba | The basic game play is to eliminate or to get eliminated. :)
NiL has been dropped for (open)SUSE 10.0. According to our maintainer our version was quite outdated and there would not exist any usable new release. (sndirsch) |
Metapixel | A Photomosaic Generator | GPL | Uwe Girlich | MetaPixel is a fast and scriptable photomosaic generator. It can find matching mosaic tiles based on colour or form.
Neat! Created package, pending for distribution Henne |

Has been there since at least 6.2 (VolkerK) |
xpaint | nice and small drawing tool for pixel images | MIT License | Users | Much more small and simple than the Gimp. XPaint has been part of former SuSE distributions but unfortunately been removed. |
