openSUSE Teams

The Mobile Devices Team is a small group of developers which is trying to make the user experience on laptops and notebooks as good as possible.

Fields of operation

"Notebooks" are a big, big field, with a lot of work to be done. So we have specialized on some issues, and ask for help with others from other teams. Here is an excerpt of issues on which we (currently) concentrate:

  • Bluetooth
  • Hotplug
  • IrDA
  • Multi-function keys
  • PCMCIA
  • Power management, with several subdivisions:
    • Suspend support in kernel- and userspace (suspend tips)
    • powersaved development (Projectpage)
    • Testing / development of runtime power management (suspending single devices while they are not in use)
  • Profile management (SCPM-Projectpage, configuration)
  • Syncing
  • Tablet PCs
  • WLAN

We also look at docking stations, card readers, and other components laptops and notebooks have, but that's mostly testing.

Additionally we have some trainees and interns working in our team. At the moment these are:

Useful things to know

If you have problems with your notebook a good starting point is the suse-laptop mailinglist. A lot of helpful people are on this list. Although the SUSE employees on that list often lack the time to answer (we are sorry for that), it is read by us, and we use what we read for improvements.

An improving list of notebooks and laptops that have been tested by users from everywhere can be found in the HCL/Laptops-section of this wiki.
