Overview

YaST is a great tool for dealing with packages, designed perfectly for beginners. You can install packages, remove them, update, and even protect them. SUSE comes with a lot of packages, but maybe you want a package not provided due to licensing issues. There are some repositories providing this kind of packages, but SUSE needs extra configuration to access them. If you are new to Linux or you don't know how to deal with repositories, this is the best place to start.

Adding Repositories

Text Mode

Simply type yast in console and press Enter. Now use your TAB and cursor keys to go to the right panel, then use your Down Arrow key until you reach Installation Source. In Installation Source, use tab and the arrow keys to navigate. To add some repositories, go to Add and select the repository type you want. Complete the fields with the necessary information then press Finish.

Graphical Mode

Open YaST. In KDE, it is located under K Menu -> System -> YaST.
Select Installation Source. The procedure is the same, but it's in graphical mode so you can use your mouse.

With Konqueror

In Konqueror, browse to the directory just above the one to add, for example, if you want to add ftp://example.com/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source,
go to
ftp://example.com/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS
and right-click inst-source,
go to Action
and choose Add directory as YaST source.

This works with FTP repositories.
For HTTP it is still necessary to add repository manually.

Last Words

When you open the Software Management module, YaST updates the package list from the extra repositories. After that, you can install the packages located on them.
