About

User and Group Management is used to configure the user and groups that make use of the system. These users and groups may be local users and groups or system users and groups. Which you are editing depends upon the radio button next to Users and Groups near the top of the window (or display if using YaST from the command line).

Expert Options lets you set various user defaults. This includes:

  • Defaults for New Users
    • Default Group
    • Secondary Groups
    • Default Login Shell
    • Path Prefix for Home Directory
    • Skeleton for Home Directory
    • Default Expiration Date
    • Days after Password Expiration Login is Usable
  • Password Encryption
  • Authentication and User Sources - Configure modules that could affect sources of user accounts
  • Login Settings
    • Auto Login - User to Log In (Drop Down Box) (NOT RECOMMENDED)
    • Passwordless Logins (NOT RECOMMENDED)
  • Write Changes Now

Users

The main window shows the login (or username), name, user identification number (UID), and the groups the member is in. Which users are being viewed can be selected by the Set Filter drop down menu; the options are Local Users, System Users, Custom, and Customize Filter. Customize Filter changes the view settings for the Custom filter.

At this screen, you may also Add, Edit, or Delete users. Adding or Editing a user will bring up a new screen, where the following is entered:

  • User Data Tab
    • User's Full Name
    • Username
    • Password
    • Confirm Password
    • Disable User Login
  • Details Tab
    • User ID (UID)
    • Home Directory
    • Additional User Information
    • Login Shell
    • Default Group
    • Groups (Each group the user belongs to is to be checked)
  • Password Settings
    • Date of Last Password Change
    • Days before Password Expiration to Issue Warning (days given are from user & password initial creation or editing date)
    • Days after Password Expires with Usable Login (After the warning is issued, how many days until the user is forced to change their password in order to log on)
    • Maximum Number of Days for the Same Password (regular and repeated number of days until the user must change their password)
    • Minimum number of Days for the Same Password (required number of days with the same password before a password change can again be made)
    • Expiration Date (specific date for the password to expire)

Click Accept to add this user to the list.

Groups

Tha main window shows the Group Name, group identification number (GID), and the members of the group. Which groups are being viewed can be selected by the Set Filter drop down menu; the options are Local Groups, System Groups, Custom, and Customize Filter. Customize Filter changes the view settings for the Custom filter.

At this screen, you may also Add, Edit, or Delete groups. Adding or Editing a group will bring up a new screen, where the following is entered:

  • Group Name
  • Group ID (GID)
  • Password
  • Confirm Password
  • Group Members (Each user belonging to the group is to be checked)

Click Accept to add this group to the list.
