SDB:Feedback: Information in Log Files

Şuraya atla: kullan, ara

Situation

You have detected a bug in SuSE Linux and want to submit a bug description to us along with some information about what happened on the system at that time.

Background

Both the kernel and numerous system services (the daemons) periodically log the system status or specific incidents in log files. These log files make it possible to determine what the system status was at a particular time or to troubleshoot bugs or malfunctions. Log files are usually stored in /var/log.

Procedure

We will first list the most relevant log files then describe how to send these files to us.

  • YaST2 problems

The output of YaST2 since its activation can be found at /var/log/y2log. Older logs are also available (numbered) in /var/log.

  • Crashes, file system problems, network problems

In this regard, the kernel messages in /var/log/messages will prove particularly interesting.

  • Graphics problems

Several approaches are possible. The exact procedure is described in the article "SDB:Collecting Information on X11 Problems".

Several log files can be compressed and collected in a single file with

tar cvfz /tmp/logs.tgz /var/log/messages /var/log/y2log

If you cannot e-mail from Linux on the current machine, please copy the file to a floppy disk with

mcopy /tmp/logs.tgz a:

Now you can also send this file from a different computer or operating system. <keyword>information,data,logfiles,logfiles,feedback,bugs,reporting</keyword>
