This page is a request for votes page, in other words, you are encouraged to add your view to show how the openSUSE community feels on a topic. Just hit the edit button for the right section and then add your name by pressing the signature button (the second last button in the toolbar above the edit window when you are editing a section.) You can of course also add why you feel a certain way, or indeed add other alternatives to the one proposed already on this page. Please don't remove other people's votes.

Background

As discussion on the openSUSE mailing list has shown in this thread, there is great confusion as to what openSUSE really is. Some of this stems from naming convention, but also inconsistent usage and statements in FAQ, documentation & press releases.

Option 1 - Leave as is

Any confusion will hopefully clear up over time, as the project matures, and the actual releases from the openSUSE project is made. This means that the openSUSE project releases SUSE Linux OSS, and Novell releases SUSE Linux, no matter what you may see or hear said elsewhere.

Option 2 - Name the SUSE Linux OSS distribution openSUSE Linux

This would make it crystal clear that the distribution that the openSUSE project produces is

  1. Produced by openSUSE project
  2. Open Source Software

Option 3 - Combine and Allow Choice at Install

Just 10.0, no separate 10.0/box/eval and 10.0-OSS. Instead, during package selection at install add an option to check All Packages or OSS Packages Only. If the latter is chosen, user package selections would be made from the OSS subset of All Packages. Only one DVD, set of CD ISOs, ftp tree, etc., to maintain.
