May we use wikibots

Problem & infos

The problem here is the sync between the different langage wikis, beginning with interwiki links.

Wikipedia uses python scripts for some tasks, why not us?

the bots that could be used here seems to be interwiki.py and weblinkschecker.py

Pros

  • interwiki.py cleans the interwiki links. In fact when translating a page it's enough to set up one interwiki link. If fr is linked to en, and es also to en, the script will complete the connections, linking es to fr, one page at a time.
  • Automated text replacements
  • Category and template maintenance
  • etc.

Cons

  • must be run as a sysop if the blocked page must be done (there a few, and could be done by hand), as a normal user if not.
  • load on the server. however the script is done for Wikipedia, a very hudge wiki. It writes no more than a page/minute
  • as pointed out on OpenSUSE_Wishlist#Bot_for_the_wiki, the openSUSE wiki doesn't use MediaWiki's login system, thus the bot software or the wiki needs to be changed to make the bots usable on this wiki.
