Driver Update
There are four different scenarios for a driver update:
- Starting YaST
- A driver is needed in order to start YaST.
- This driver makes it possible for linuxrc to access the installation media and set up the YaST environment in ramdisk.
- A driver is needed in order to start YaST.
- Installation
- A driver is needed in order to install.
- This driver makes the harddisk accessible (storage/network controller) where SUSE Linux is to be installed.
- A driver is needed in order to install.
- Hardware support
- A driver is needed in order to support add-on hardware.
- This driver enables non-critical hardware in the running system. Typical examples are 3D graphics controllers, internal modems, #:usb webcams, etc.
- A driver is needed in order to support add-on hardware.
- Kernel update
- New drivers are needed due to a kernel update.
- When upgrading the kernel, drivers which are not included in the kernel package must be updated to match the new kernel.
- New drivers are needed due to a kernel update.
We will create a normal Add-On-Product CD for the new drivers.
Depending on the scenario above, this must be registered at different times. Either by pressing F5 at the boot-prompt (scenario 1), as an add-on product (scenario 2), or as an additional installation source (scenarios 3 and 4).
