Driver Update

There are four different scenarios for a driver update:

  1. Starting YaST
A driver is needed in order to start YaST.
This driver makes it possible for linuxrc to access the installation media and set up the YaST environment in ramdisk.
  2. Installation
A driver is needed in order to install.
This driver makes the harddisk accessible (storage/network controller) where SUSE Linux is to be installed.
  3. Hardware support
A driver is needed in order to support add-on hardware.
This driver enables non-critical hardware in the running system. Typical examples are 3D graphics controllers, internal modems, #:usb webcams, etc.
  4. Kernel update
New drivers are needed due to a kernel update.
When upgrading the kernel, drivers which are not included in the kernel package must be updated to match the new kernel.

We will create a normal Add-On-Product CD for the new drivers.

Depending on the scenario above, this must be registered at different times. Either by pressing F5 at the boot-prompt (scenario 1), as an add-on product (scenario 2), or as an additional installation source (scenarios 3 and 4).
