SDB:Unable to Boot from the DVD

Symptom
When you try to install SuSE Linux 8.0 from the DVD, it cannot be read. Furthermore, a low sound can be heard as the drive reads the DVD. Other operating systems do not correctly detect the DVD, which is mistaken for an audio CD. Although this problem occurs mainly in connection with Pioneer DVD drives, other drives seem to be affected, too.
Cause
Unfortunately, the exact cause has not been determined yet.
The drives known to be affected so far are:

You can find out whether you have one of these drives or a Pioneer DVD drive by means of the file /var/log/boot.msg. Proceed as follows:
- Start the rescue system from the first SuSE Linux 8.0 CD-ROM (option "Rescue System" in the start menu).
- Select your keyboard layout.
- Log in as root.
- Search for a Pioneer drive in the file /var/log/boot.msg with grep DVD /var/log/boot.msg
If a drive not in the list above is found, send the output to the e-mail address:

Please specify "SDB-wessels_pioneerdvd" as the subject. If possible, also enclose the output of hwinfo --cdrom to provide us with more information about your DVD/CD-ROM drive.
Solution
According to the messages received so far, it is possible to install from the following drives:

Also according to the received information, a firmware update to the latest version solves the problem for the listed drives. The respective firmware for your drive can be downloaded from http://www2.pioneer-eur.com/pioneer/support_software.jsp?category=support/software
Attention: Follow the update instructions very carefully! Firmware updates are at your own risk. SuSE is not liable if your hardware is damaged during the update procedure. Also consider that a firmware update cannot be undone.
