This article gives settings for the CS4236B on the Dell Optiplex GX1.

Situation

Initial installation may detect the soundcard on the GX1. But the installed configuration can also unexpectedly disappear.

Procedure

How to fix the card:

There should be no entries for thie CS4236B in any /etc/isapnp.conf. If they are there, delete them. With the original hardware for the GX1 there should be no isapnp.conf file at all.

with YaST2

Start YaST2, select "Hardware" and start the module "Sound".

  • In "Soiund Configuration" choose the detected card "not configured CS4236B".
    • Click "Edit"
    • Select the radio button "Advanced setup with possibilty to change options".
    • Click "Next"
  • The "Sound Card Advanced Options" windo opens."
    • Enter the following settings for the CS4236B
      • cport = 0x210
      • dma1 = 0
      • dma2 = 1
      • fm_port = 0x388
      • irq = 5
      • isapnp = 0
      • mpu_irq = 9
      • mpu_port = 0x330
      • port = 0x530
      • sb_port = 0x220
    • After setting each of these click "Next"
  • The "Sound Card Volume" window comes up.
    • set your volume the way you like it.
    • Click "Next"
  • You're back to the main "Sound Configuration" window.
    • At this point you may choose the "Other" menu to set volume or start the sequencer. The volume setting under this menu is a bit more useful than the previous one under "Sound Card Volume". If you plan on using midi, then choose to start the sequencer.
    • Click "Finish" and wait for SuSEconfig to finish up.

Hopefully, your CS4236B is ready to go.
