SDB:Network card 3Com 3C509 isn't connecting

Symptom:

The network card is detected correctly, but it does not send any (valid) packages.

The output of a ping looks as follows:

mars:~ # ping -v 192.228.118.73
PING 192.228.118.73 (192.228.118.73): 56 data bytes
ping: packet too short (56 bytes) from 192.228.118.77

Solution:
