SDB:ISDN-Test
Version: 1.0 -
Subject
ISDN test for collecting the information that is indispensable if you have a problem with ISDN and want to submit a support request to the SuSE Support desk.
Due to the high complexity of the messages, support request handling by phone is only possible to a limited degree. For this reason, please send the information you collect with the help of this article by e-mail to the Support desk.
Since the complex log messages can be stored on a floppy disk, you are free to use any e-mail account that may be available.
Procedure
Apart from standard information such as
- The exact model and type of the ISDN adapter (ISA, ISAPnP, PCI card)
- How the ISDN adapter is connected (directly to the NTBA or to a phone exchange)
- Which SuSE Linux version was installed and how (new installation, update, scope of installation)
routing information and relevant messages from /var/log/messages
are required.
Please proceed as follows (as user root)
1. If necessary, activate debug messages with
grep -q "^debug" /etc/ppp/ioptions || echo "debug" >>/etc/ppp/ioptions
(enter all of this in one line, using a space as a separator)
2. Create the system information with
procinfo >messages.out lspci -v >>messages.out pnpdump >>messages.out cat /etc/resolv.conf >>messages.out
3. Stop the ISDN system with
rci4l stop rci4l_hardware stop
4. Set a mark in /var/log/messages with
echo "ISDN-Test" | logger
5. Start the ISDN system with
rci4l_hardware start rci4l start rcroute start
6. Print the routing table with
route -n >>messages.out
7. Enter
isdnctrl dial ippp0
to check whether a connection can be established; after 10 seconds, enter
isdnctrl hangup ippp0
8. Retrieve the messages from /var/log/messages with
tail -n 200 /var/log/messages | grep -A 200 "ISDN-Test" >>messages.out
(enter all of this in one line, using a space as a separator)
9. Insert the contents of the file messages.out (ASCII text) directly into your e-mail message. If you use a different operating system for this purpose, proceed as follows:
9a) Recode for DOS/Windows with
recode lat1..ibmpc messages.out
Recode for MacOS with
recode lat1..mac messages.out
9b) Store on a floppy disk with
mount /floppy cp messages.out /floppy umount /floppy
9c) In the other operating system, insert the file MESSAGES.OUT from the floppy disk directly into the e-mail message.
