Symptom

After starting a sound application or using the OSS PCM device "/dev/dsp" to play a sound file, the sound system on your computer can no longer be addressed.

Cause

A bug in ALSA 0.9.6 OSS PC emulation results in a kernel oops in some systems.

Solution

The ALSA driver modules (including snd-pcm-oss for the OSS emulation) are included in a precompiled kernel package. Perform a kernel update via YOU (YaST Online Update) to install the current ALSA drivers on your system. <keyword>sound,alsa,broken,mute,oss,kernel,oops</keyword>
