Make IBM 600 Series Thinkpads Work With SUSE Linux 10

Şuraya atla: kullan, ara

This will allow you to set up PCMCIA devices like Wireless cards, and use the onboard sound. Probably more stuff is fixed as well :).

As of 17. October 2005

First things first

If you are just getting started, install SuSe 10 without passing any kernel parameters when booting off the install CD. Just use the "Install" option off the boot menu. Make sure you don't try any of the below until the install is totally completed and you have booted up to your Linux desktop at least once.

Test run

Alrighty...now that you have ensured that the system has been installed properly (be careful running apps the require sound, they may lock up the system), it is time. Reboot the computer, and when the boot menu comes up press F2. In your default startup option (the one that doesn't mention Failsafe), add the parameter pci=noacpi to the list.

Note: Make sure the kernel parameter is preceded by a space!

Now start up the newly configured option by pressing "Enter" after you add the parameter. When your system starts up (if your volume is turned up) you should hear the startup sound upon logon to your prefered windowing system desktop. Double check that things are working by playing a game like Frozen Bubble, you will notice that it will work now.

Making things official

To make this kernel parameter be passed by default upon startup, follow the below directions:

  • Load up Yast2
  • In the "System" Category, load the "Bootloader" module.
  • Select the default boot option and then edit it.
  • At the bottom of the pane that comes up, add pci=noacpi to the list of Kernel Parameters.
  • Select OK, then Finish. Reboot your computer, and the sound and other things should work.

Good luck!
