Mirror
A mirror in computing is a direct copy of a data set.
On the Internet, a mirror site is an exact copy of another Internet site. Mirror sites are most commonly used to provide multiple sources of the same information. The mirror sites are short called mirrors. They are a way of providing fast and reliable access to the files on the sites with popular (and large) downloads.
Mirror Selection
The original site can be overloaded with demand and serve files slower than mirrors, or refuse connection completely. That is the reason for often given advice:

Remark for manual selection: The data set on mirror site can be complete or incomplete. The second doesn't mean that you can't find all files that you need for installation on incomplete mirror. Some sites don't mirror all of ftp.suse.com , but only the most popular portions, like directory i386. That directory contains all files needed for installation of SUSE on a common PC and that is kind of computer that most of us have. The i386 directory is named that way long time ago when that was synonym for IBM PC with Intel 86386 or compatible processor. Now it is synonym for any PC compatible architecture.
